Everyone at some point procrastinates, but there are those who procrastinate on a daily basis. Those are the types of people that do not know how to stop procrastinating, and start progress. To be good at getting work done and be a much more productive person you must learn how to stop procrastinating most of the time, it is still possible to procrastinate sometimes it’s human nature. Indecision is a big hurdle that most procrastinators can’t seem to get over. Making a decision is better than being idle and indecisive.

People who are indecisive are the ones that make excuses for almost everything. It is especially bad when procrastinating, to make better decisions it is best to share ideas with a colleague or someone else. By sharing information with other people they are more willing to help you come to a better decision, even to help see a different side of things. When making a decision do not think about having it be correct just make a decision and go with it.

Another way to stop procrastinating is to think about a reward you’re going to give yourself for starting and completing the task. Your lack of interest in any type of work can lead to it not being finished, a reward peaks your interest and makes you more likely to not only start the job, but also to finish it because you are wanting to get that reward in the end. Rewards can also be another distraction, if when you are completing the work, and are only thinking about the reward you are not completing the work as sufficiently as you could be. It is best to have a reward objective in your mind but the reward should only come if the work is complete, and up to your expectations.

Many people who procrastinate always think of their jobs as being unpleasant, when most of the time it’s not as unpleasant as they originally thought. For procrastinators it is important to just jump in do the job, and do not worry about any unpleasantness that accompanies it. Many times the job is a lot easier than the procrastinator thought. By jumping into a job or project that needs to be done, you are ahead of the curve when it comes to the deadline. That type of thinking is positive motivation because you started it way before it was due so you’re more likely to complete it way ahead of the deadline.

One of the best ways to stop procrastination is to be organized, when everything is organized the pieces will fall into place, and the work which may seem daunting at first is not that difficult. By having a game plan before the work has begun, and being more organized. You will soon realize how productive you can become.

It may be difficult for some to stop being lazy, but once you learn how to stop procrastination you will see many positive changes in your life. Being organized and decisive you will be much better capable of handling a lot more work, and you do not have to think about a reward at the end. Remember procrastination affects everyone, and it can be overcome by simple changes in your habit, you will be better off because of it.

There are many reasons why people procrastinate.  An interesting article was posted today on StopProcrastinating.net about the different types of procrastination.

There are five types of procrastinators mentioned in the article:

  1. The Overly Relaxed - someone who is too lazy to start.
  2. The Intelligent - someone who feels they can get it done “later” because they’re smart enough to get it done in a short amount of time.
  3. The Decisional Type - someone who can’t decide.
  4. The Escapist - someone who is a day dreamer
  5. The Afraid - someone who is afraid of the unknown

How to Avoid Procrastination

Procrastination is all about motivating yourself to do work. For chronic procrastinators it is easy for them to start something and not finish. By thinking of the work ahead of you in a positive manner more can get done than thinking of it negatively. Rewards are the best motivation to starting and completing work, and they allow you to reflect on all the work that you completed.

Most of the time the work that procrastinators put off is daunting, instead of thinking of the work as being too much to handle, or something you do not want to do, think of it to be fun or in a positive manner. By doing this you will not only learn how to avoid procrastination, but you will also learn that the work was not as hard as you thought. Negativity is a procrastinator’s best friend, by thinking of work as what it is work, procrastinators are less likely to do it. Think of work as an activity that can be fun and challenging. When work is seen as being positive not only are you more willing to do it, but you will do a much better job at completing it.

Motivation is something that every procrastinator needs, whether it be from someone else or any other reward that is waiting at the end of the work. By having a system of rewards waiting for you, your motivation and confidence will rise exponentially. The reward can be anything from doing something you absolutely enjoy to simply taking a walk to reflect on all the progress you made, rewards are wonderful for procrastinators.

One of the best ways to avoid procrastination is not making excuses for why you are not doing the work. Excuses are primarily the main reason why people procrastinate in the first place. By saying you are not starting the work because something else came up it is more likely less important than the work that needs to be done, just diving in and do the work without any excuses, you will see that any excuse is a bad excuse.

Another great way in avoiding procrastination is developing a work habit, if you work better in the mornings then get most of the work done in the mornings and then relax in the evenings. If you work better during certain days at certain times of the day, make sure that those times are the times that you are doing work and not Procrastinate. Your work habits should also be free from distractions, distractions can kill any progress that is made.

For some procrastinating is a way of life, and once you learn how to avoid procrastination you will then be what to develop a much more prosperous life. By keeping motivation through rewards, and by using positive thinking when starting and completing work you’ll see progress grow dramatically. Having a sustainable work habit is something else that procrastinators need to avoid procrastination. When you develop a way to get work done you will no longer fear success but embrace it.

Starting Tasks Without Thinking

Instead of dipping your toe in the water to check the temperature, jump in. The same principle applies to starting work, instead of telling yourself you are going do it after you check your e-mail or after you drink your morning coffee. Depression Procrastination Can Be Helped

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  Or in this case, the depression or the procrastination?  Depression procrastination can freeze the mind until a person becomes almost totally immobilized.  Nothing that doesn’t need immediate attention, and some things that do, get done.  They may get involved in less important things, or they may do nothing at all.  There are unwanted delays and missed deadlines.  Opportunities are missed.  Families, friends and co-workers become frustrated and even angry.  The depressed procrastinator may lose his or her job, be divorced, or lose their place to live.

Hopelessness and Lassitude:

Depression procrastination takes a person to a state of hopelessness. Unlike normal procrastination, this kind of procrastination does not relate to things such as failure and fear or maybe even success. Three Ways to Beat Procrastination

Overcoming procrastination can be extremely difficult for most, but if you know that procrastination is a problem the first step in beating procrastination is telling yourself you’re going at work done. Most procrastinators understand they have a problem with productivity and telling yourself it’s time to quit being lazy and get work done is simply a baby step to living in much more productive life.

By structuring your time you will have a better understanding of why you procrastinate. It is very easy for a procrastinator to buy a calendar or a notebook and tell themselves they are going to start and finish their work with minimal distractions however, whenever they buy that calendar or notebook they put off using it. If you are truly serious about beating procrastination do yourself a favor and do not buy a calendar or a notebook because on the surface it looks like you’ve made a life-changing decision but in reality you always revert to your old self.

There are a couple ways to actually beat procrastination without reverting back to your old self. One way is listing your tasks or work that needs to be completed from the most difficult to easiest. Another way is using time to your advantage, by dictating the hours of the day instead of having the hours dictate you, you will slowly see it changing your behavior. By lessening distractions you will see that beating procrastination is much easier if you have a plan and you actually stick to it, and do not procrastinate sticking to the plan.

Listing Your Tasks

Our workday is filled with several different tasks, and if you list them starting with the most difficult and ending with the easiest you will gain much more confidence in your ability to be productive throughout the entire day. Procrastinators tend to start with something easy and then build their way up to the most difficult task; much like warming up for the rest of the day. If you start and complete the most difficult task of your workday before doing anything else your day will gradually get much more easier. For chronic procrastinator’s this is essential because they are more likely to do the easiest tasks, by completing the most difficult task a procrastinator’s day will feel much more productive then if they completed several easier tasks.

If after completing each task you set out to do during the day you want to take a break then do so because you earned it.

Getting Rid of Distractions

Distractions are why people procrastinate in the first place, if your work is mostly on the computer and you don’t need the Internet; turn it off. The project or task is less likely to get completed when you’re constantly checking your e-mail and going on social networking websites. Getting rid of distractions is a lot easier said than done however, by getting rid of at least one distraction you will be more productive. If the work that needs to be completed requires the Internet then use it only for work related purposes. When you’re finished using Internet turn it off and forget about it, go on to your next project or task.

Time Management

One of the best ways to manage time for procrastinators is to break up work by the hour. Tell yourself or write down what you want to get done within the hour, when the hour is up reflect back what you wanted to accomplish and what actually got done in that hour. Then for the next hour adjust according to your ability to get the work done for the next hour, and continue doing that throughout the day you will see that it’s much better to dictate the hours of the day rather than having the hours dictate the day.

Rome was not built in a day, so therefore beating procrastination takes time, it takes routine, and it takes motivation. These were just some methods that have worked however, they only work if you stick to them and do not tell yourself you’re going to do it and end up not doing it.

Two Definitions of Procrastination

To gain a better understanding of why some people delay performing tasks, it is important to have a good sense of the definition of the word procrastination.  The fundamental definition of it is that it is a putting off or delaying the performance of some tasks to a time period in the future.   It is an avoidance behavior.  This can lead to traumatic situations.  An individual needs to thoroughly understand the definition of procrastination to better understand its causes.

This delaying or putting off of disagreeable tasks is the usual behavior for many people.  They avoid or fear the unpleasant outcomes associated with the tasks.

People tend to delay or put off certain obsessions in order to avoid stress that they anticipate in the performance of the task.  In other cases, the anxiety or stress is increased as a result of their postponing the task and using avoidance behavior.

The exact reasons for procrastination may vary among people,but the outcome usually contains the elements of laziness, disinterest, etc.   On the other hand,  a person will judge a task to take less time than it actually requires to complete.  Then  this person waits until the very last moment to start on a task, and  he will find himself overly stressed to complete the task before the deadline.  This kind of definition of procrastination develops an assurance in the minds of people that everything is under control and that all will be fine.  It leads to physical and mental stress.

In most of the cases, the procrastinating definition brings out two distinctive areas such as physiological and psychological. These two distinctive areas evidently show the causes of procrastination. First of all, physiological definition of procrastinate involves the brain prefrontal cortex from where the decision making abilities are developed. If the desired control is not developed, then it may result in lack of concentration on the tasks completion.

On the other hand, the psychological procrastinating definition implies that this kind of procrastination can be caused by lower self-esteem developed by an individual, due to the anticipated poor outcome for their assignments. Thus, this definition of procrastinate also indicates that most of the people often spend more time in planning than executing, thus delaying a project.
